Do you have growing children? Then there is a good chance that they will need braces in the long term. Insurance with a good reimbursement for orthodontics can be a difficult choice in such a case. Do you opt for a supplementary insurance policy or is a dental insurance policy with coverage for orthodontics better?

Basic insurance for children

The insurance obligation for the basic insurance also applies to children up to the age of 18. However, you do not have to pay a premium for them. As a result, there is no deductible for children. Your children must be credited to the policy of one of the parents.

Policy of dad or policy of mama?

Do you and your partner have different health insurance policies? Then it is often smart to have your child (ren) credited to the policy of the parent who has the most comprehensive package. Investigate in advance whether that insurance also fits in well with their care needs. Consider, for example, the reimbursements for metal braces, glasses, arch supports and physiotherapy.

Children and braces

Many children are referred to the orthodontist at some point. This can be an expensive joke, because orthodontics is only reimbursed by the basic insurance if there is a serious development or growth disorder of the mouth, teeth or jaw.

That is why parents with growing children often opt for health insurance with good coverage for orthodontics. But pay attention! Children orthodontics is reimbursed for some insurers from supplementary insurance, for others the coverage is included in the insurance — affordable dental plans.

Do you and your partner have insurance with different health insurers? Then examine through which policy there is coverage for orthodontist in the South Africa. Does one of the partners need a lot of care each year from supplementary health insurance? Then it is useful to choose a supplementary health insurance policy for him or her which also covers orthodontics for children.

Glasses and arch supports

Glasses, lenses and arch supports are only reimbursed under the basic insurance in exceptional medical situations. To be eligible for reimbursement, you must take out supplementary insurance. In the case of arch supports, ensure that they also reimburse the costs of the podiatrist.

Physiotherapy for children

Physiotherapy is partly included in the basic insurance. Whether you are reimbursed for the treatments depends on your age and the reason for the orthodontic treatments.

Children up to the age of 18 receive the first 9 treatments for physiotherapy and exercise therapy as standard. And if necessary, they will receive a maximum of 9 additional treatments reimbursed.

Does your child not have a chronic condition but does need regular physiotherapy? Then it is advisable as one of the parents to take out supplementary insurance with good coverage for this.

Travel insurance

Do you have specific wishes regarding the reimbursement of any healthcare costs abroad? Then it is sometimes better to opt for taking out an additional healthcare module with your travel insurance policy. In many cases you can also declare your deductible for costs abroad and the costs of repatriating a sick person are covered.
